Description

This stone is a piece of Bisbee turquoise.  The mines in Bisbee Arizona were famous for their production of silver and copper beginning as early as 1877.   All of the tailings, including the turquoise was simply discarded and taken to the dumps.  It wasn’t until the 1950’s that miners began to keep chunks of the blue stone, and in the 1970’s it began to be used in jewelry.  All the Bisbee mines closed in the 1970’s, so the only source of the turquoise was in the mine dumps.  All of those dumps are private property, and because of the rise in the value of Bisbee turquoise, the public is not permitted to explore the tailings.  Jake obtained this stone while in Bisbee from a local lapidary member.  The stone has traces of the brown matrix, is set in sterling silver with a fancy bezel with a split half round ring shank. The ring size is 7.
